Exeter Morgans was established in 1994 with the intention of promoting old-style, sweet-tempered, true black Morgan horses.

NLF Mariah Ann, the foundation broodmare, is a granddaughter of B-L Independence, a well-known show horse in the Northeast in the early 1970s. He was of Government breeding, 15'2", black, and of old-style conformation and disposition. He sired upward of 100 foals and lived to be 32.

Mariah's daughters and granddaughters constitute the band of broodmares for Exeter Morgans.

The business is family-owned and operated by Dr. Pamela Lea, who also owns and operates the Exeter Veterinary Clinic. In 1998, Dr. Lea moved operations for both Exeter Morgans and the veterinary clinic to new facilities on 140 acres, located 10 miles northwest of Cooperstown, New York.
